Mass of Christian Burial for Philip Harold Newell, 22, Oskaloosa, will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Valley Falls. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery northwest of Oskaloosa.

Mr. Newell died Thursday, June 27, 1991, at an Emporia hospital. He had a heart ailment.

He was born Nov. 24, 1968, in Wichester, to Fred and Mary Wagner Newell. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1987 and was a senior at Emporia State University. He had worked in the information center in Memorial Student Union there and later helped organize summer camps at ESU.

While in high school, Mr. Newell was a member of the Student Gifted Program, Knowledge Bowl Team, National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America. He received the citizenship award from Oskaloosa elementary and secondary schools.

At ESU, he was a member of Phi Delta Theta social fraternity, where he was vice president and rush chairman. He also was a member of Didde Catholic Campus Center and was chairman of the dedication committee in 1990.

Mr. Newell was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Valley Falls.

Survivors include his parents, of Oskaloosa; two sisters, Carolyn Newell, Lawrence, and Sharon Powell, Shawnee; and a grandfather, Carl F. Wagner, Atchison.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the church, where a parish rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

The family suggests memorials to the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity Building and Improvement Fund at ESU, in care of Hampton-Barrett Funeral Home in Oskaloosa.
