Three Lawrence members of Kansas Press Women earned awards in the National Federation of Press Women 1991 Communications Contest.

Ann Gardner, editorial page editor for the Journal-World, won third place for her page layout in daily newspapers with 30,000 or less circulation. Carol Francis of Carol Francis: Creative Communications received an honorable mention for a radio single commercial. Patricia Solbach, a medical researcher at Menninger's who writes family health articles, won two honorable mentions for a review and an article on science and health.

The contest drew nearly 2,000 entries that had previously received first-place honors in state and foreign affiliate communications contests. The local award winners contributed to total state winnings that resulted in KPW receiving the sweepstakes award for the state affiliate with the highest number of contest points. All the awards were presented during the annual NFPW Conference in Orlando, Fla., in June.
