An additional $192,826 from the estate of Eunice Harkey Melik of Harvey, Ill., will increase a scholarship fund for minority students at Kansas University.
In 1990, a $400,000 bequest from Melik's estate established the Eunice Harkey Melik Scholarship Fund at the KU Endowment Association. The fund currently provides 40 annual scholarships for undergraduate students. The enhanced fund will make available two scholarships of $5,000 each for minority students in the KU School of Law.
Melik was born in Gardner and moved with her family to Lawrence in 1920. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School. In 1928, she graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology from KU, where she participated in Kappa Phi, Alpha Kappa Delta, YWCA Cabinet and the Sociology Club.
She was a life member of the KU Alumni Association and in 1978 received a Gold Medal Pin from KU in honor of the 50th anniversary of her graduation.
Malik died in September 1989.
