A steering committee comprised of local business and government representatives will meet at 3:30 p.m. July 25 at the KPL Gas Service office, 333 W. Ninth, to form bylaws and a mission for a volunteer business council.
The 12-member steering committee was formed from business representatives who met last month to discuss discuss a volunteer business council.
The council, which would consist of representatives from Lawrence and Douglas County businesses, could encourage their employees to volunteer for non-profit agencies.
Similar corporate volunteer councils in Kansas City and Topeka provide a broad base of volunteers through employee programs.
Cathy Carthen, community relations chair for the project, said the steering committee on July 25 would decide who would serve on the council, the amount of possible council dues, and how it might work with the Roger Hill Volunteer Center.
Members of the steering committee and their employers are Tom Booghen, Professional Service Industries Inc.; Carthen, KPL Gas Service; Bonnie Dunham, Lawrence Public Schools; Dale Flory, Hallmark Inc.; Linda Gutierrez, First National Bank; Lanaea Heine, Roger Hill Volunteer Center; Richard Holzmeister, Capital Federal Savings; Steve Johnson, KPL Gas Service; Judith McFadden, Lawrence Memorial Hospital; Chris McKenzie, Douglas County; Todd Sutherland, Savings Bank of Lawrence; and Mike Wildgen, city of Lawrence.
The first meeting of the council probably would be scheduled following the steering committee meeting, Carthen said.
