— Lawrence High's girls basketball team didn't look past 2-9 Hutchinson on Thursday night.

For that, Lion coach Gary Hammer is thankful.

"I'm glad we weren't flat. I was concerned we might look ahead. We talked about it before the game," Hammer said.

The Lions dropped Hutchinson, 57-34, in a first-round Emporia Glacier's Edge Tournament game. The Lions, now 7-1, will face Derby in a 7 p.m. semifinal tonight in the Emporia High gym. Derby, now 11-1, beat Wichita Heights, 58-49, on Thursday.

In other quarterfinal games, Emporia beat Wichita East, 87-45, and Rose Hill topped Leavenworth, 68-51. Emporia and Rose Hill will tangle in the other semifinal at 8:45 tonight.

"WE JUMPED out early on them. We played pretty well," Hammer said. "We had three girls in double figures and Jill (Oelschlager) had nine. We spread the scoring well."

Erin McElwain had 13 points and eight rebounds; Kelli Boehringer 10 points and five steals. Megan Kampschroeder also had 10 points. Gwen Mullens had six assists to go with six points.

"We had the chance to play a lot of girls," Hammer said. "We wanted to rest the starters for tonight and tomorrow. We have six games in 10 days. That's a lot of games. I'm concerned about the fatigue factor going into next week. I'm glad the JV got in quite a bit. They played the fourth quarter."

Hammer started substituting in the second quarter. Lawrence led 32-11 at halftime.

THE LIONS are seeking their third consecutive Glacier's Edge title.

"Our seniors have not lost at the tournament yet," Hammer said.
