Those looking to stay in Lawrence during Kansas University's graduation weekend are probably out of luck. There is no room at most of the inns.
Many local hotels and motels filled up about a year ago for KU's 1991 graduation ceremony, which is May 19.
"I think everyone's filled up," said Pam Rayton, front desk manager at Travelodge, 801 Iowa. "We've been filled for almost a year. It's rough at graduation."
Rayton said the Travelodge already has taken reservations for KU's 1993 graduation weekend.
Linda Maas, manager of Westminster Inn, 2525 W. Sixth, said people are still calling the Westminster for rooms, but the motel has been booked for graduation since October.
"It's a big weekend," Maas said. "People are almost fighting over them (rooms.) People are already calling for next year."
THE HOLIDAY Inn Holidome, 200 McDonald Dr., suggests that people in need of a room during graduation weekend go to Topeka or Kansas City.
"We usually send them to Topeka," said Michelle Kinder, front desk clerk. "There are two Holiday Inns there."
Charles Jesse, front desk clerk at Quality Inn, 2222 W. Sixth, said Lawrence hotels and motels fill up fast for "the majority of KU functions that take place."
"You can almost guarantee that we're going to be filled," Jesse said.
The Virginia Inn Motel, 2907 W. Sixth; Jayhawk Motel, 1004 N. Third; Eldridge Hotel, 701 Mass.; Best Western Hallmark Inn, 730 Iowa; Bismarck Inn, 1100 N. Third; Days Inn, 2309 Iowa; Halcyon House Bed & Breakfast, 1000 Ohio; and Super 8 Motel, 515 McDonald Drive, are also full for graduation.
ROOMS REMAIN available at College Motel, 1703 W. Sixth, and at the Airport Hotel, which doesn't take reservations that far in advance.
KU will open Joseph R. Pearson Hall for graduation. Kathy Nace, conference coordinator, said KU will begin accepting reservations for JRP after spring break.
If JRP fills, Nace said KU will strive to make other arrangements to accommodate university guests.
