Tonganoxie Efforts to promote school bus safety by the Tonganoxie Parent-Teacher Assn. received recognition this month in the Kansas PTA Bulletin.
Melanie Moss, PTA vice president, said the district always has been concerned about safe transportation of school children. After attending a national PTA conference last year, members returned home with fresh ideas and immediately launched a bus safety promotion.
Among their accomplishments listed in the bulletin:
The bus safety chairwoman hung posters and presented school staff with a bus safety folder.
Bus drivers spoke to children about bus safety, answered questions and distributed bus safety cards.
Youngsters practiced evacuating the buses as they would in the case of an emergency.
The manager of the school bus leasing company attended a PTA meeting and showed a film on bus safety.
After PTA members expressed concern over traffic passing as buses were loading and unloading, the Leavenworth County sheriff's officers started patrolling bus routes regularly.
