Services for Vernon D. James, 64, Lawrence, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary with the Rev. David Aanonson officiating. Military graveside services in Oak Hill Cemetery will be conducted by Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion.
Mr. James died of cancer Sunday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka. He had been a Lawrence resident since 1932.
He was born May 5, 1926, in Bixby, Okla.
Mr. James was a machinist at Big A Auto Parts in Lawrence before he retired five years ago because of health reasons. He previously was manager of Pladium Lanes in Lawrence.
He was a member of Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion and Elks Lodge No. 595, both in Lawrence.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothea; a daughter, Janet James, Lawrence; three brothers, Jesse S., Maywood, Calif., Raleigh, Lincoln, Ark., and William T., Monticello, Ark.; three sisters, Flossie James Eccles, Booker, Tex., and Edna Bell and Lyda Robinson, both of Atlanta; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the mortuary.
