Companies that produce valentines expect about a billion of the love and friendship missives to be exchanged today, up from 900 million last year, a Hallmark Cards Inc. spokesperson said today.

"It's up a little bit because we see the holiday growing from recognizing the importance of romantic relationships, to a day of also acknowledging the value of friendships too," said Renee Hershey, marketing media relations coordinator for Hallmark's main office in Kansas City, Mo.

Many of the Valentine's Day cards traded today have rolled off the presses at the Lawrence Hallmark Cards Inc. plant, at 101 McDonald Dr.

However, Hershey and local plant officials said they were unable this morning to track down the exact number produced at the Lawrence plant, which also makes ribbons, bows and puzzles.
