The Salvation Army of Lawrence has announced that its efforts to raise $115,000 in its 1990 Christmas Campaign were successful.
Salvation Army kettles brought in $42,300, which is a 33 percent increase over the year before. Mailed donations totaled $63,500, and more than 5,000 toys valued at $16,000 were received through the Toys for Tots campaign led by Sunflower Cablevision Channel 6.
Alice Johnston, chairman of the Christmas committee for the Salvation Army advisory board, said this was the best year ever in the organization's attempt to ensure that everyone have a good holiday.
She said 525 families were given Christmas dinners. Also, more than 1,000 coats were distributed through the Share the Warmth program, which was co-sponsored with Scotch Fabric Care.
