Law enforcement report
A 39-year-old Lawrence woman was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for a head injury she suffered after apparently being attacked at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Police, who said the victim did not want to cooperate with officers, gave little information about the incident. The woman said a man she did not know struck her in the head with a two-by-four. The incident was reported by a friend of the woman, who found the victim lying injured at the victim's apartment in the 1300 block of Kentucky.
Jodi A. Groff, 20, 1603 W. 15th, and a passenger in her car, Patrick Brennan, 20, 1136 La., were treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital after an accident at 12:47 a.m. Sunday at 23rd Street and Naismith Drive. Police reported that Groff was eastbound on 23rd and was making a turn onto Naismith when her car collided with a car driven west on 23rd by Russell D. Hepner, 21, Rt. 1, Baldwin. Hepner was cited for running a red light. Firefighters were called to the scene at 1:06 a.m. to wash away antifreeze that was leaking from one of the cars.
Criminal case proceedings
Ricardo Hernandez, 38, 2200 Harper, Friday pleaded guilty to an amended felony count of attempted aggravated assault. Hernandez originally was charged Sept. 4 with a felony count of aggravated assault after he allegedly shot a 28-year-old Lawrence man in the side of the head outside what then was called AJ's 8th Street tavern, 117 E. Eighth. The victim suffered a minor wound. Sentencing for Hernandez is scheduled for March 7.
