A 79-year-old Lawrence woman was killed Saturday after she was struck by a van on Iowa street, a Lawrence police sergeant said.

Lillian Baur, Lawrence, was pronounced dead at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after the accident, which occurred at 8:45 p.m. at Iowa and University streets.

Mrs. Baur and her husband, E. Jackson, had been walking west to east across Iowa, said Sgt. Ron Dalquest. She was struck by a van that was headed south on Iowa.

Police are still investigating the accident, Dalquest said. He said late Saturday evening that no charges had been filed in the accident.

Two cars headed northbound on Iowa also were involved in the accident. Dalquest said a car was struck by another car behind it when its driver slammed on his brakes at the scene of the accident. No one was injured, Dalquest said.

Dalquest did not identify the drivers of the van or the northbound cars.

The Baurs had attended the annual Unitarian Fellowship Christmas party at the home of Paul and Helen Gilles, 1301 Iowa. The Baurs were walking to their home at 6 Westwood Road when the accident occurred.

Mrs. Baur was active in civic affairs and the League of Women Voters of Douglas County.

Her husband is a retired professor of sociology at Kansas University.
