An 18-year-old Lawrence man has been arrested in connection with the Nov. 25 robbery of the Town and Country Market Store, 501 W. Ninth.
Lawrence police Det. Craig Shanks said this morning that the suspect was arrested and booked into the Douglas County Jail on a charge of aggravated robbery after being interviewed by detectives Monday night at the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, 111 E. 11th.
Shanks said Monday's interview was the second that detectives had conducted with the man, who was the only suspect in the weeklong investigation of the robbery.
"He had been seen in the area by a person who knew him," Shanks said.
Apparently, the owner of a business near Town and Country knew the suspect and had seen him walking in the area a few minutes before the robbery.
According to police reports, a robber, armed with a gun, walked into the convenience store at 6:13 a.m. Nov. 25 and demanded that the two clerks hand over the money in the cash register. The man reportedly left the store with an undetermined amount of cash.
The clerks were the only ones in the store at the time of the incident. No one was injured.
Although the suspect reportedly was carrying a gun, Shanks said that detectives had not recovered a weapon.
The suspect was scheduled to appear at 4 p.m. today in Douglas County District Court.
At this time, Shanks said, police are not linking the man to an attempted robbery Nov. 20 at the same store.
In the Nov. 20 incident, a robber walked into the convenience store and sprayed Mace at the clerks before telling them to give him the money in the cash register. No one was injured.
A patron who drove up to a gasoline pump during the robbery attempt apparently frightened the man off.
