A man who pleaded guilty in 1977 to murdering a 46-year-old Lawrence woman is one of several inmates convicted in local courts whose parole hearing will be held in January, the Kansas Parole Board announced recently.
James R. Gardner, the man, is serving a 30-year sentence for second-degree murder stemming from the Feb. 6, 1977, death of Margaret Maxey.
Gardner, who pleaded guilty May 16, 1977, to the charge, is being held at Ellsworth Correctional Facility.
Gardner and his brother, Joseph Jr., were arrested Feb. 7, 1977, and accused of fatally stabbing Maxey, hanging her and cutting off her legs. Joseph Gardner was sentenced to two to 10 years imprisonment after he admitted covering up his brother's crime.
