A preliminary hearing scheduled for today in Douglas County District Court for a 28-year-old man charged with murdering a Lawrence man has been reset for Friday.
Kenneth Lee Morris, the defendant, made his first court appearance Thursday and was charged with first-degree murder stemming from the death of Danny Davis, 40.
Davis was found beaten with a golf club Aug. 8 at the residence where he was staying, 619 Ill. He died five days later at a Kansas City, Kan., hospital.
Lawrence police arrested Morris last week in Phoenix, Ariz., where he had been arrested on burglary charges not related to Davis' death.
Morris willingly returned to Lawrence last Wednesday and was booked into the Douglas County Jail, where he currently is being held in lieu of $1 million bond.
Topeka authorities have said they also consider Morris a prime suspect in the death of a Lawrence man who died in Topeka, but Topeka officials said this morning an arrest warrant has not been issued.
Topeka authorities will continue investigating whether Morris was involved with the death of Randy L. Wieneke, 37, Lawrence, who was found dead in a south Topeka motel. Autopsy reports indicate that Morris died from a sharp blow to the head.
