The Lawrence chapter of the Firefighters Relief Assns. will receive $60,145 in this year's payout by the Kansas Insurance Department.
The associations, made up of firefighters in most Kansas fire districts, receive a portion of fire insurance premiums paid by individuals and businesses in their districts, said Lawrence Fire Chief Jim McSwain.
"It was established many years ago to provide disability and other insurance for firefighters because of the hazards of the job," he said.
Fire departments, especially those in rural areas, also use the funds for training programs, McSwain said.
