Melissa Swartz, the defending high school state champion in the 800 meters, has signed a national letter of intent to run for Kansas, coach Gary Schwartz announced Tuesday.
Swartz, a senior at Shawnee Mission West, won the 800 and anchored SM West's winning mile relay, two-mile relay and distance medley relay teams last weekend at the Kansas Relays.
Her career best times include 57.0 in the quarter-mile, 2:15 in the half and 5:08 in the mile.
Swartz is the second track athlete to sign a national letter of intent to attend Kansas next year. Kristi Kloster of Shawnee Mission Miege signed with Kansas last week.
