The Jayhawks will be honored again Saturday with a parade sponsored by Downtown Lawrence Inc. and the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.
Peggy Johnson, parade organizer, said today that 20 groups have made arrangements to have entries in the parade, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday.
The parade, which will feature the Kansas University basketball team, their coaches and staff, the pep band, mascots and cheerleaders, will start at Seventh and Massachusetts streets and head south on Massachusetts to South Park. The staging area for the parade will be at Buford Watson Park, Seventh and Kentucky streets.
Johnson said the basketball team deserves to be honored for its season.
"We knew we'd have the parade even if we lost Saturday," Johnson said, referring to KU's game Saturday against the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Final Four. KU won that game, but was defeated by Duke Monday night in the NCAA finals.
Johnson, who helped organize parades for the team in 1986 and again in 1988, when KU won the national championship, said she is waiting to hear if Coach Roy Williams and members of the basketball team will make presentations during the parade.
Jayhawk fans who want to have entries in the parade may contact Johnson at 842-3209 or the Downtown Lawrence office at 841-5521.
