A fire Sunday night at a southwest Lawrence tanning salon caused extensive damage to the business and resulted in smoke and water damage to six neighboring shops. It was one of three structure fires reported in Lawrence over the weekend.

Lawrence firefighters were called at 9:39 p.m. Sunday to the European Suntanning Hot Tub and Health Club at Holiday Plaza, 2449 Iowa. Lawrence Fire Chief Jim McSwain said heavy smoke was coming from the business when firefighters arrived.

McSwain said four fire engines and one ladder truck were called to the blaze, which took firefighters about 45 minutes to extinguish. The fire, which apparently was caused by an electrical malfunction, was confined to the health club. However, several surrounding businesses suffered smoke and water damage.

Other businesses damaged were De'Gage' Dance Wear, the Pizza Hut delivery store, Sharon's Bridal Boutique, Cross Reference Bookstore, University Studio and an Asian food store.

McSwain said fire officials were still in the process of determining how much damage had been done.

About $90,000 in damage was caused by another fire in a west Lawrence home.

A home belonging to Larry and Judy Walburn, 3434 Doral Ct., caught fire about 9 a.m. Saturday. Seven people, along with two dogs and a cat, escaped the fire.

McSwain said that on the night before the fire, the home's electrical breaker had been kicked off because of an extension cord that was under the leg of a couch. Unaware of the problem with the cord, the family reset the breaker, and the fire started Saturday morning near the couch.

The house has two main levels and a loft area, which is where the fire started. McSwain that only 10-15 percent of the home's structure and contents was damaged by the fire.

Around 8 a.m. today, Lawrence firefighters responded to a mobile home fire at 827 Walnut in North Lawrence. Fire Capt. Allen Johnson said the fire was confined to the home's bedroom and caused about $350 in damage. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, Johnson said. A woman and her three children were in the home when the fire started, but were not injured.
