A Kansas University governance group recommended Thursday that Chancellor Gene Budig appoint a special committee to deal with the issue of discrimination against homosexuals in ROTC programs.
University Council, a group of students and faculty, agreed on a voice vote to request that a "Chancellors Committee" be formed and that it report to the council at least once each semester on its efforts.
The council previously asked Budig to move Reserve Officer Training Corps commissioning ceremonies off campus, because the Department of Defense prohibits homosexuals from serving in the military.
Budig rejected the council's proposal, but said he supports efforts at the national level to "revisit" the DOD's policy because it conflicts with the university's anti-discrimination guidelines.
Council members Siegfried Lindenbaum and Morris Faiman, both professors of pharmacy, proposed the formation of the committee.
