Three former Kansas University football players did not survive the final cuts of National Football League teams on Monday.
Former KU and Lawrence High punter Bucky Scribner was waived by the Minnesota Vikings. Cornerback Elvis Patterson, another NFL veteran and former Jayhawk, was let go by the Los Angeles Raiders.
And wide receiver Quintin Smith, a free agent who was the only member of KU's 1989 team seeking a spot on an NFL roster, was placed on waivers by the Chicago Bears.
That leaves six former Jayhawks on the rosters of NFL teams heading into the start of the regular season next weekend. The six are Paul Fairchild, offensive guard, New England; Broderick Thompson, offensive guard, San Diego; Harry Sydney, fullback, San Francisco; Alvin Walton, strong safety, Washington; LeRoy Irvin, cornerback, Detroit; and Mike Norseth, quarterback, Green Bay.
Two former Jayhawks, linebacker Willie Pless and wide receiver Richard Estell, are playing in the Canadian Football League.
Two Lawrence High products remain on NFL rosters linebacker Keith DeLong of San Francisco and nose tackle Jeff Wright of Buffalo. DeLong played collegiately at Tennessee; Wright at Central Missouri State.
