Prosecutors this morning were preparing to file charges stemming from a shooting late Saturday outside a downtown Lawrence tavern.
Douglas County Dist. Atty. Jim Flory today was reviewing police reports about the incident, in which a 28-year-old man suffered minor injuries and a Lawrence man was arrested on charges of attempted second-degree murder and carrying a concealed weapon.
Police reported that the suspect, Ricardo Hernandez, shot Faron K. Dillon, 3323 Iowa, in the head at 11:30 p.m. Saturday outside AJ's Eighth Street tavern, 117 E. Eighth.
Officers said the men had been arguing and fighting inside the bar before they went outside.
Chris Mulvenon, Lawrence police spokesman, said a .38 caliber bullet struck Dillon above his left ear, traveled a short distance between his skull and his skin and then made another wound when it exited his skin.
A police report said that after he was shot, Dillon wrestled Hernandez to the ground and began beating him. The men fought for several minutes before police arrived.
Dillon was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Hernandez was arrested on charges of attempted second-degree murder and carrying a concealed weapon. He remained in jail this morning.
Flory this morning said he believed he would file charges later today.
