Overland Park Shawnee Mission East ended Lawrence High's soccer season with a 2-1 win in the first round of regionals here Tuesday. But it wasn't easy.
The Lions, who finished 5-11-3, trailed 2-0 at halftime. But Keith Nelson scored on an assist from Daron Copp approximately 13 minutes into the second half, and the Lions kept the pressure on for the rest of the game.
``We dominated the whole second half,'' LHS coach Shaun Trenholm observed. ``The best soccer we played all season was in the second half. We did what we wanted to do. We attacked the far post, we switched fields, we used a lot of passing, we didn't give the ball up off the dribble, we shot at the box.''
``I'M DISAPPOINTED we're out of the tournament,'' Trenholm said, ``but it's nice we finished with our best soccer. We had the ball basically the entire second half. People stepped forward and did what they had to do. They did everything they were asked to do. We're really proud of our kids. The seniors went out playing well, and they'll be missed.
``Daron Copp, John Mier, Mike Schwartz, Brian Orchard, Jarrod Lynds, Keith Hohn . . . they all played real inspired soccer.''
Trenholm said the Lions' record didn't indicate the quality of the players.
``We had a lot of ups and downs,'' the coach said. ``We were really a better team than our record shows.
``THEY WERE frustrated because, like a lot of games we played, we played well, but we didn't get the goals to win. I share their frustration in the lack of scoring, but I'm proud of my team, and I'm going to miss my seniors.''
The Lions' senior class consisted of Copp, Nelson, Hohn, Todd Sliski, Todd Ohmart, Brian Stebbins, Max Gruber, Travis Lippert and Craig Sweets.
