Funeral services for Marion Francis Affalter, 77, Oskaloosa, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Friends Church in Lawrence with the Rev. Fred Leimkuhler officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence.

Mr. Affalter died Tuesday at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital, Winchester.

Mr. Affalter was born May 31, 1913, in Merriam. He was a resident of Lawrence since 1961, moving there from Leawood.

He worked in maintenance for the Kansas University Athletic Department from 1961 until he retired in 1972. He was well known in the 1960s at home KU basketball games as "Big Blue."

Before moving to Lawrence, Mr. Affalter was a horse showman and manager of the Saddle and Sirloin Club, Leawood. He was also a former steel worker.

Mr. Affalter attended the Friends Church in Lawrence.

He married Martha Elizabeth Stark on Oct. 5, 1941. She died May 21, 1981.

Survivors include two sons, Dan Affalter and David Affalter, both of Lawrence; a daughter, Nancy Smelser, McLouth; a sister, Hazel Crispin, Lee's Summit, Mo.; two brothers, John H. Affalter, Merriam, and Arthur Affalter, Smyrna, Ga.; and eight grandchildren.

The family suggest memorials to Douglas County Citizens Committee on Alcoholism in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
