De Soto The DeSoto School Board discussed preliminary plans for a three-year school improvement plan Monday.
Supt. Glenn Coltharp said the board divided the plan into six areas: instructional, instructional support, alternative education, professional development for staff, communications and management. Committees have formed and started work on the various topics, he said.
Board members plan to develop a three-year calendar of school improvement events, which they will present at the first meeting in December, Coltharp said.
In other business, the board:
Announced four adult education classes, which will meet for 2 hours weekly from Jan. 20 to Mar. 10. Those classes are Introduction to French, Introduction to Drawing and Painting, Introduction to Computers, and Alcoholism: Its Effects on the Home and Society. A fee will be charged for the three introduction courses, but the alcoholism class is free.
Discussed the upcoming $7 million bond election, which would finance an addition to the district's high school, renovation of the junior high school and construction of a new elementary school.
Announced that an informational videotape about the election is available to the community.
Passed a resolution altering the board member districts for a more evenly distributed population of registered voters. One boundary line was pushed east, absorbing some voters in the Shawnee and Lenexa areas.
