The Salvation Army of Lawrence has collected $18,000, or 16 percent of its $115,000 goal, in its annual Christmas drive, a news release from the organization said.
The kettle drive officially kicked off Friday. Along with a mail appeal, the two drives make up the primary fund-raisers for the Salvation Army's Christmas assistance program.
The Salvation Army has received 400 applications for Christmas assistance.
Last year at Christmas, 613 families were served food. In addition, the Salvation Army distributed 4,704 toys, 2,610 coats and 100 pairs of pajamas.
There were also 800 visits to shut-ins in Douglas County, including people in nursing homes, jails and in their homes to deliver 3,200 gifts.
The Salvation Army Toy Shop is located at 1040 Vt. this year.
