Services for Rutherford W. "Bill" Hayes, 70, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Hayes died Thursday at Colonial Manor.
He was born Dec. 14, 1919, in Hutchinson. He was a lifelong resident of Lawrence.
Mr. Hayes was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and retired in 1980 after 35 years of service. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and St. John church, and a life member of the Knights of Columbus.
He married Eleanor Lewis on March 7, 1942, in Lawrence. She died in 1983.
Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Hayes, Kansas City, Mo., and Sandra M. Shawhan of Maui, Hawaii; a sister, Frances Harden, Lawrence; and a granddaughter.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
The family suggests memorials in his name to Colonial Manor and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
