The local Pelathe District of the Boy Scouts collected about 9,100 pounds of food last weekend in its annual "Scouting for Food" drive.
The collection was down from the 15,000 pounds gathered last year because the Scouts' Heart of America Council in Kansas City did not get involved in the project this year. Therefore, the Scouts did not have as many bags to distribute to area homes, said district executive Dail Blake.
"It does not reflect on the people of Lawrence at all," Blake said.
People who would like to donate canned goods or other non-perishable food items may take food to the Salvation Army, 946 N.H., by 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Salvation Army will provide the food to six area agencies for distribution to needy families.
