Kansas Turnpike authorities on Saturday continuted to investigate a head-on automobile collision that occurred early Saturday about a half-mile west of the Lawrence service area on Interstate 70. A KTA trooper said authorities were continuing to search for the driver and a passenger of a 1986 Ford four-door that was traveling east in the westbound lane of the turnpike and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer rig. KTA authorities believe the driver and passenger walked away from the accident. The driver of the rig, Perry W. Paynter, 27, Salina, was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with head and neck injuries, the KTA said. However, an LMH hospital nursing supervisor said no record of treatment was on file for Paynter.
