The Kansas Open golf tournament will boast a record purse of $55,000 this year, tournament director Jerry Waugh announced Tuesday.
Last year's purse was $50,000.
The Open is scheduled July 25-28 at Alvamar. In addition to the larger purse, the field has been narrowed from 195-plus golfers to 156. Among the 156 competitors will be 126 professionals and 30 amateurs.
"We are excited about this year's Kansas Open," Waugh said. "As the tournament grows, it attracts more and more of the top golfers in the region. By narrowing the field to 156 golfers, qualifying for the tournament will be more competitive than ever."
The tourney kicks off July 24 with the annual Pro-Am/Sponsor Day. Qualifying begins Wednesday, July 25, which is also a practice day for exempt golfers. The 54-hole tourney runs from Thursday, July 26, through Saturday, July 28.
For the fourth consecutive year, Cottonwood Inc., will be the beneficiary of the event. Net proceeds of the past three years have totaled more than $130,000, according to Judy Morris, director of development at Cottonwood Inc.
Deadline for entries for both pros and amateurs is June 29.
