Winners of the Lawrence St. Patrick's Day Parade coloring contest and finalists for the St. Patrick's Day Parade Queen were picked Tuesday night.
Gene Shaughnessy, St. Patrick's Day Parade chairman, said six elementary school children were selected to ride in the parade as winners of the coloring contest.
Five finalists for the St. Patricks Day Parade Queen also were selected at an organizers' meeting Tuesday. The five are Gina Brown, a junior at Kansas University; Sharon Clifton, a KU senior; Katie Fender, a sophomore at Emporia State; Kelli Donley, a KU freshman; and Cheryl Powers, a KU freshman.
The queen will be named and crowned at 7:30 p.m., March 13, at the Flamingo Club, 501 N. Ninth, during the "Blarney Hour" festivities. Music and a banquet will be featured at the event, which will begin at 6 p.m.
On Tuesday night, the parade committee held a benefit concert at Johnny's Tavern, 401 N. Second.
Shaughnessy said he did not know how much money the committee was able to raise from the benefit.
The parade entry deadline is March 10. Anyone wanting to enter the parade may pick up entry forms at the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department office in city hall.
Entries also are available for a 5K run, to be held on the morning of St. Patrick's Day.
