A 22-year-old Lawrence man was treated by ambulance workers for facial injuries after a scuffle at 11:55 p.m. Thursday with a doorman at Pizazz, 901 Miss. Police said the man, a native of India, reported that the doorman struck him and shoved him down the front steps of the club after refusing to let him into the club. The man told officers he believed the doorman would not allow him in because he was not white. The doorman told officers he barred the man because the crowd had reached capacity. The doorman said he told the man that he would let him into the club as soon as a customer left the building. The doorman, 21, said he and the man got into a shoving match because the man kept trying to get inside. The district attorney's office is reviewing the case.
A 22-year-old Lawrence man was arrested on charges of forgery, theft and making a false writing after he allegedly took his roommates' credit card and also stole and forged checks belonging to them. The roommates reported Thursday that the man committed several forgeries and thefts between April and July 5. Among the allegations made by the roommates is that the man wrote a $700 check to Southwestern Bell on the victims' account and that he arranged a $1,000 cash advance on one of the victim's credit card. The man remained in jail today.
Officers today were investigating what they believe is a case of someone passing counterfeit money at the Zarco 66 station at U.S. Highway 59 and Douglas County Road 460. A 20-year-old clerk reported that a man driving a Chevrolet pickup entered the store about 7:35 p.m. and paid for gas with a $10 bill, a $5 bill and a quarter. Later, the clerk said, he was going to give the $10 bill as change to another customer when he noticed that the bill looked fake. He kept the bill and notified officers, who sent it to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to determine whether it is counterfeit. The clerk gave officers the tag number of the man's truck, and officers today are searching for the man.
