A 19-year-old Leavenworth man drowned Sunday while swimming near a boat dock at Lake Dabinawa, Jefferson County sheriff's officers reported today.
In a press release, officials said Nathaniel B. Garrettee leaped into the lake from either the dock or a boat, lost his life preserver and sank below the surface about 6:15 p.m.
After searching briefly for the victim, Garrettee's friends contacted Jefferson County sheriff's officers at 6:30 p.m. Sheriff's officers contacted a number of emergency response agencies, including the Douglas County Underwater Search and Recovery team. The eight-member team is made up of representatives from the Lawrence Police Department, Lawrence Fire Department, Douglas County Ambulance Service and Douglas County Sheriff's Department.
J.R. Miller, a Lawrence police officer and member of the search team, said Garrettee's body was found about 10 p.m. by fellow diver Byron Miller, a Lawrence firefighter.
Miller said the unit had been on a training exercise in Miami County from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and was called to Lake Dabinawa about 10 minutes after members returned to Lawrence.
Miller said Garrettee's body was found about 25 feet from the shore in about 10 feet of water.
Lake Dabinawa is about 10 miles north of Lawrence.
