Dear Editor:

The beginning of the 1990s has ushered in an era of change for all facets of American society from entertainment to politics to economics. These types of changes have never been more evident than in Lawrence, Kansas. Population growth, city expansion and a strengthened economic base all signal a solid foundation which will carry the city into the year 2000 and beyond.

One of the cornerstones of Lawrence's proud history has been its strong leadership in business, education and local government. Throughout the last ten years, that tradition has been strengthened through the Leadership Lawrence program. Helping to build the "movers and shakers" for tomorrow is what Leadership Lawrence is all about.

The 1990 Leadership Lawrence class recently spent an enthusiastic snd energetic seven months learning about the many diverse mechanisms that go into making a community such as ours run efficiently and effectively. The class learned about the costs of leadership, problems facing and solutions awaiting the cities of today and goals and predictions for our future. Leadership Lawrence participants were presented topics as varied as the dwindling water supply from the Colorado River, to the impact of neighborhood associations. Obviously, a number of the discussions were quite lively.

Currently, the Leadership Lawrence board is soliciting nominations and applications for the 1991 Leadership class, which is scheduled to begin in October. Anyone in the community who is interested in and dedicated to the productive growth of Lawrence is urged to submit the names of individuals who are not afraid of standing in the forefront and working toward the betterment of the community. Those nominated will be given the opportunity to submit applications to the selection committee.

Nominations and applications will be accepted through Sept. 6. Requests for additional information on the Leadership Lawrence program or requests for nomination forms should be directed to the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

We look forward to seeing you in the 1991 Leadership Lawrence class. Together, we go boldly into the future.

Nancy Kaiser-Caplan,

Edward Brunt, for the

1990 Leadership Lawrence class.
