A 38-year-old Merriam man died early today when he was struck by a semi-tractor trailer about 10 miles east of Lawrence on the Kansas Turnpike.
Terry White was pronounced dead on the scene about 6 a.m. by the Leavenworth County coroner. A Kansas Turnpike Authority dispatcher said White died after his vehicle became disabled on the westbound side of Interstate 70, and he walked into a lane of traffic and was struck by the semi.
Before he was struck, White was looking under the hood of the vehicle he was driving, a 1982 Chevrolet, and stepped out to the side of the vehicle, the dispatcher said.
Donald Douglas, 37, Kansas City, Mo., was driving the semi.
Douglas swerved to avoid White, but cars in the left lane of traffic prevented him from moving far enough to avoid hitting the man, the dispatcher said.
