PIPER PRESS HURTS KAWS IN 72-51 LOSS

— Brian Lang figures Perry-Lecompton's boys basketball team is caught in a vicious circle.

The latest turn came Friday night as the Kaws fell to visiting Kansas City Piper, 72-51.

"We just fell apart," said Lang, who paced the Kaws with 20 points 16 the second half. "We couldn't handle the press, and after we got down, we couldn't come back."

Enter the vicious circle theory. The Kaws, now 0-8, have lost by an average of just over 21 points per game.

"We just gotta get confidence," Lang said. "We gotta get a win. We try too hard not to make mistakes, and that causes us to make them."

PERRY COACH Floyd Morgison agreed.

"We just got whipped," Morgison said. "We were scared to death. Why? When you're 0-8, what do you think will happen?"

Jeff Spreer scored his only basket of the game to give the Kaws an early 3-0 lead, but Piper responded with two quick baskets. Lang responded with a three-pointer with 5:28 left in the first quarter to give the Kaws a 6-4 lead, but the Pirates went on a 14-1 run, posting an 18-7 lead.

The Pirates led, 44-15, at halftime.

"It was a late night," said Piper coach Rich Zych of the 9 p.m. start. "We got a big lead, and it's hard to come back. At the end, I think the kids were just putting in their time.

"OUR KIDS came out ready to play, and Perry was a little flat. Our press hurt 'em, and we were a little quicker, a little more talented."

And more experienced. Four of Piper's starters were seniors, while Perry started four juniors and a sophomore.

"It's all mental," Morgison said. "We just gotta keep working. A lot of these guys don't have much varsity experience. We just gotta keep playing."

Jeff Chastain led the Pirates, now 4-4, with 16 points. Scott Kroening added 13 and Steve Johnson contributed 10. Aaron Faimon scored 10 for the Kaws.

"We had to have this game," Zych said. "I don't think we're an average team. We really needed this to stay in the hunt in the league."
