January 13, 1990

You don't have to be Al McGuire or Dick Vitale to know that traps, picks, boards, turnovers or any other basketball buzzwords don't mean anything if the ball doesn't go through the hoop.

It's elementary, really, why Lawrence High fell to Olathe South, 61-56, Friday night at the LHS gym.

The Lions shot 29.8 percent from the floor.

"We practiced our shooting all week," said junior point guard Reggie Mayo, who, along with junior forward Craig Butler, led Lawrence with 12 points.

"We were out there before the game warming up," Mayo said. "We even came early to get in some shooting. Then we came out tight, hit the front of the rim and missed our bunnies."

Bunnies are short crib shots. And LHS coach Ron Weber would welcome a call from McGuire or Vitale or any other basketball guru who has a quick fix for missing bunnies.

"THAT'S THE answer to the $1,000,000 question," Weber said. "Seventeen-for-57 on our home court. That's terrible. Those shots inside as short as we are, we've got to score those crib shots."

Actually, the Lions were on their way to a much worse shooting night until they rallied in the fourth quarter. Through the first three periods, they hit just 24.4 percent.

Still, thanks largely to a 42-28 rebounding advantage, Lawrence was able to make an end run that nearly caught the Falcons.

The Lions whittled a 12-point Olathe South lead to seven by the end of the third quarter, and made it three points 1:34 into the fourth period.

The Falcons stretched the lead back to 10 points, 55-45, with 1:08 left, and still the Lions rallied. With 27 seconds left, Mayo hit a three-pointer to make it, 57-54, but LHS could come no closer.

"WE WERE ABLE to take care of the ball and make some free throws down the stretch," O-South coach Tom O'Dell said. "They've got a good basketball team. That's a young team. They were relentless right to the end."

It was, indeed a young team, LHS coach Weber said.

"There is one promising note," he said. "In the fourth quarter when we were coming back, we did it with four juniors and a sophomore. Those kids gave everything they had."

They simply started too late, said Butler, who scored two straight three-point shots to start the rally.

"We didn't come out and play four quarters," he said. "The first three we came out and played dead, and at the end we decided to pick it up. After we missed a couple shots, everyone was afraid to shoot."

Olathe South's defense helped make the Lions timid.

"They came out in a zone, and our outside shooting wasn't on tonight," Butler said. "Then we were afraid to throw the ball inside, afraid to throw it away."

Lawrence dropped to 1-6.

"WE'RE FRUSTRATED," Butler said, "because there are three games we should have won, but we came out dead and decided to pick it up in the fourth quarter. But by then it was too late."

Meanwhile, Lawrence JV rolled on, slamming Olathe South's JV, 65-42. Matt McWilliams scored 11 and was the only Lion in double figures, but 11 players scored. The JV ran its record to 7-0.

The Lions' varsity will meet No. 2-ranked Topeka High at 6 p.m. next Tuesday in the first round of the Topeka Invitational Tournament at Highland Park.
