Mary S. Gallagher, 22, 2411 La., and Marvin H. Schulteis Jr., 19, 1105 La., were treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital after suffering injuries in an accident at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Ninth and Maine streets. Schulteis was driving a 1987 Honda south on Maine and attempted to turn left onto Ninth Street when he collided with Gallagher, who was driving a 1981 Ford west on Ninth street, Lawrence police reported. Gallagher was cited for driving through a red light and for not wearing a seatbelt, police reported.
Criminal charges filed
Kevin Coleman, 24, 420 Ill., made a first appearance Thursday on a felony count of aggravated assault stemming from a Feb. 3 incident in which he allegedly fought a local man while armed with a beer bottle. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
Charges have been filed against two 18-year-old local women who allegedly sold fake identification cards on Feb. 1. Sydney Y. Hu and Jeannine A. Shara, both of 420 W. 11th, were charged with a felony count of dealing false identification cards. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
Criminal case proceedings
Shawn R. Mitchell, 18, Topeka, was ordered Wednesday to stand trial on a felony count of auto burglary and a misdemeanor count of criminal damage to property. Mitchell was arrested and charged Jan. 4 along with another Topeka man with three counts of auto burglary, two misdemeanor counts of theft and two misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property after they allegedly entered three vehicles and took miscellaneous items. A judge Wednesday dismissed the charges against the other man, Andre C. Rhoiney, 20, saying the state presented insufficient evidence in a hearing. Arraignment for Mitchell is scheduled for March 9.
Two Lawrence men were sentenced Thursday on charges stemming from a July 4 incident in which a local police officer allegedly saw them using cocaine in a car at a North Lawrence intersection. Gary L. Smart, 38, 509 Lincoln, was sentenced to one to three years imprisonment on an amended felony count of conspiring to possess cocaine. A judge took the matter of probation under advisement. The other man, Michael R. Garner, 33, 915 E. 12th, was sentenced to one to two years imprisonment on an amended felony count of conspiring to possess cocaine but then was granted a probation term. Each man originally was charged with a felony count of possessing cocaine.
Kurt J. Wertzberger, 23, 2426 Brush Creek, has been ordered to stand trial April 23 on a felony count of theft and a misdemeanor count of theft. Prosecutors allege that Wertzberger fraudulently obtained more than $1,000 in state unemployment benefits between Oct. 1, 1988, and Nov. 12, 1988. Also Tuesday, Wertzberger was charged with another felony count of theft alleging that he took a local man's 1987 Suzuki motorcycle on Nov. 15. A preliminary hearing in that case is scheduled for Feb. 21.
