Burglaries and thefts reported
Stereo components valued at $2,940 were taken between 2 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday from a truck parked on the 1900 block of Massachusetts, Lawrence police reported.
A television valued at $1,500 was taken between Jan. 29 and Monday from a residence on the 800 block of Highland Drive, Lawrence police reported.
Isabelle Stemmerman, 81, 1501 Inverness, was listed in fair condition today at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, and Helen Starns, 82, 3101 W. 27th, was listed in good condition today at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Both women were injured in an accident that occurred about 6:10 p.m. Saturday nine miles east of Lawrence on Kansas Highway 10.
Criminal case proceedings
Bruce A. Wolfe, 20, Kansas City, Mo., was sentenced Tuesday to one to five years imprisonment, but then was granted a five-year probation term on an amended felony count of attempted aggravated sexual battery. Wolfe pleaded guilty Jan. 2 to the charge, which was amended from a felony count of sexual battery. The charge stems from a Nov. 18 incident in which a 21-year-old Haskell Indian Junior College student reported that she was raped.
Dean C. James, 22, Topeka, Tuesday pleaded no contest and was found guilty of a misdemeanor count of obstructing the legal process stemming from a Jan. 13 incident in which he led local law enforcement officers on a four-mile chase on the banks of the Kansas River. Local authorities said James ran from an officer who arrested him on a warrant for failing to appear in court on a misdemeanor criminal trespassing charge. After entering his plea, James was sentenced to one year in the Douglas County Jail but then was granted a two-year probation term.
Darren Walker, 23, 1903 W. 26th, recently was sentenced to one year in the Douglas County Jail on an amended misdemeanor count of attempted theft. Walker originally was charged June 9 with a felony count of attempted burglary after he allegedly tried to break into Gutierrez Restaurant, 2600 Iowa. He pleaded guilty Jan. 3 to the amended charge.
Brett Amerine, 25, 628 N. Second, recently was sentenced to one to five years imprisonment on a felony count of theft. Amerine was charged July 11 with the theft charge and a felony count of burglary after he entered a rural residence and took furniture items. He pleaded guilty Jan. 4 to the theft charge.
Willie M. Zimberoff, 20, 1942 Stewart, Monday waived a preliminary hearing and was ordered to stand trial on two felony counts of dealing false identification cards and a misdemeanor count of making a false writing. A hearing at which a trial may be scheduled was set for April 2. Zimberoff allegedly sold fake IDs between August 1988 and May of last year.
Jason E. Wilburn, 29, 532 Fireside, Monday waived a preliminary hearing and was ordered to stand trial on a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct and a felony count of possessing cocaine. Wilburn was arrested Dec. 29 after he allegedly created a disturbance at the Pool Room, 925 Iowa. Officers allegedly found cocaine in Wilburn's possession during the arrest. A trial was scheduled for April 4.
At a preliminary hearing Monday, a March 28 jury trial was scheduled for a 25-year-old Eudora man charged with a felony count of taking indecent liberties with a child. The charge, filed Jan. 19, alleges that the man molested an 8-year-old local girl in November.
