CLEVELAND, OHIO Veteran point guard Darnell Valentine signed a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday after the NBA club learned it had lost guard Mark Price for the season with a knee injury.
Valentine, 31, last saw regular-season NBA action when he appeared in 77 games as a back-up point guard for the Cavs in 1988-89. He averaged 4.2 points and ranked second on the team with 174 assists.
The Cavs renounced their rights to Valentine on July 14, 1989. After sitting out the 1989-90 season, he participated in the Milwaukee Bucks training camp this season. The Bucks cut him before the season started.
Price, who was hurt against Atlanta last Friday, was scheduled to undergo surgery today to repair at torn anterior cruciate ligament.
