Workers are preparing for installation of a sculpture in a pocket park at the intersection of 23rd and Massachusetts.
The piece, "Improvisation," by Lawrence artist Jon Havener, will be installed during the coming week and will be unveiled during dedication ceremonies planned for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 7.
George Osborne, city forester, said that city crews on Wednesday placed a seven-foot piece of limestone in the park. The rock will serve as a mount for the sculpture.
"Improvisation" was selected from more than 25 entries judged by a committee of the Lawrence Arts Commission.
The piece, valued at $4,000, was purchased by the city through its "Percent for Art" program. Under its policy, the city can set aside 2 percent of the cost of certain capital improvements undertaken by the city. The money then is turned over to the Lawrence Arts Commission for the purchase of artworks for public places.
