Although there has been an increase in apartment and utility activity almost since the beginning of the month, this is the weekend that Kansas University students traditionally arrive en masse in Lawrence.
University residence halls open and parents crowd into town to deliver their children and their belongings for the beginning of another fall term at KU.
Unfortunately, many students and parents will be greeted by bothersome street work that may slow their progress around Lawrence this year. But the city nonetheless wants students to know they will receive red-carpet treatment in spite of the somewhat bumpy road underneath.
For year-round Lawrence residents, this weekend presents a noticeable change in the activity level around the city. This may call for some extra patience with drivers who don't know their way around the city and heavy traffic in areas near the university. But local residents also should remember what a vital part KU plays in the quality and vitality of life in Lawrence.
This is an exciting time for students, and all local residents should want to make their first experiences in Lawrence pleasant ones. Best wishes to all the students who will enter KU this fall. We hope your stay in Lawrence and your studies at KU will prove to be both enjoyable and enriching.
