Private memorial services for Virgil Grant Fox, 82, Lawrence, are pending. Mr. Fox died today at his home. He was born April 23, 1908, in central Iowa.
Mr. Fox was a graduate of Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa, and had a master's degree from Drake University. He spent most of his teaching career in Des Moines, Iowa, teaching and counseling at Lincoln High School.
He retired in 1971 and moved to Diamond City, Ark., where he lived from 1972 to 1989. He was on the city council and was chairman of the Methodist Church Building Committee. He taught Sunday School for many years and was active in his church and community.
Mr. Fox moved to Lawrence in March 1989.
His hobbies included woodworking and sports. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lawrence, and was a life member of the National Educators Assn.
He married Bernice Gretchen Tigges on Aug. 20, 1935, in Minneapolis, Minn. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Virgil Grant Fox Jr., Allentown, Pa.; two daughters, Jewell Willhite, Lawrence, and Karen Carpenter, Guam; a brother, Floyd E. Fox, Decater, Ala.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund in care of Rumsey Funeral Home.
