A 21-year-old Lawrence man suffered broken facial bones after he and another 21-year-old Lawrence man were attacked at 2:10 a.m. Sunday in the alley in the 1000 block of Kentucky, Lawrence police reported today. Police said the men were in the alley looking for the house where a party was being held when they were approached by two other men, who hit them in the face and then fled. The injured man was treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
A 21-year-old Overland Park man was arrested on charges of burglary, theft and possessing stolen property after he allegedly was caught shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday taking items from an apartment under construction in the 1200 block of George Court. Police reported that the man took fixtures and appliances valued at $1,191 from the building. Officers this morning said the theft was related to another theft between 10:30 a.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday in which $1,540 worth of appliances were taken from an unfinished apartment in the building.
Carleen D. Eubank, 16, Rt. 5, remained in critical condition this morning at the Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., with injuries she suffered in a two-vehicle accident at 12:35 a.m. Sunday about 1 miles south of Lawrence on U.S. Highway 59. A Kansas Highway Patrol dispatcher said Eubank was northbound on U.S. 59 and was turning west onto Douglas County Road 458 when the van she was driving was struck by a southbound pickup truck driven by Larry D. Meigs, 40, Altoona. Meigs and a passenger, Joshua Meigs, 12, Altoona, were treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Eubank was taken to LMH, then taken by Life Flight helicopter to KUMC.
Lamurvin Nelson, 11, 525 Ala., was treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital after the bicycle he was riding collided with a car at 8:15 p.m. Sunday on Sixth Street east of Crestline Drive. Police reported that the boy was riding westbound on Sixth and changed lanes in front of a westbound car driven in the right-hand lane by Yvette J. Nunez, 19, 3707 Westland Pl. The boy was cited for improper lane usage and inattentive driving.
Beth Hupp, 11, was dismissed this weekend from Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Mo., where she was taken Aug. 2 after an accident at the West Lawrence exit of the Kansas Turnpike.
