— Services for Thel E. Askew, 59, Herington, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Herington, with the Rev. John Heeter officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington.

Mr. Askew died Tuesday at a Herington hospital. He had cancer.

He was an over-the-road engineer for Southern Pacific Railroad, Cotton Belt division. He took early retirement in 1981 for health reasons.

From 1981 to 1983, he lived in Lawrence, where he managed an apartment complex with his wife.

Mr. Askew worked for Beech Aircraft until 1957 when he became employed by Rock Island Lines. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

He was born Sept. 14, 1930, in Emporia. He graduated from Emporia High School. Aside from the two years he spent in Lawrence, Mr. Askew had lived in Herington since 1951.

Mr. Askew was a member of First Baptist Church, Herington, chairman from 1971 until 1977 of United Transportation Union in Herington, and past president of Herington Tri-County REACT. He also was a member of Carey McClaren Post No. 12 of the American Legion in Herington.

He married Barbara L. Naland Murray on Aug. 5, 1970, in Miami, Okla. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Vickie Strome and Laurie Johnson, both of Herington; a son, Mike, Foster City, Calif.; four stepdaughters, Debra Hamman, Topeka, and Cecilia Veerhusen, Mary Granzow and Joan Sullivan, all of Herington; three stepsons, Michael Murray, Kingston, N.Y., Mark Murray, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Patrick Murray, Herington; his mother, Neva Askew, Emporia; a sister, Rosalie Lenigan, Emporia; and 16 grandchildren.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Donahue Funeral Home in Herington, where the family will meet with friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.
