— David Soult doubled in two runs in the ninth inning, giving Kansas a 5-3 win over Southwest Missouri State Wednesday at the Bears' field.

KU broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth.

Jeff Niemeier struck out but reached on a passed ball. He was then forced on a sacrifice attempt by John Wuycheck. After a Mark Hummel pop to third, Pat Karlin singled to put runners at first and third. Karlin, now hitting .340, then stole second. He and Wuycheck scored on Soult's hit to center that dropped in front of Richie Ayers.

Curtis Shaw retired the Bears in the bottom of the ninth and gained the win, his seventh against three losses.

KARLIN WENT 4-5, stole three bases, scored a run and had an RBI. Soult was 2-5 with two RBI. Niemeier also had two hits for KU, 21-23. The Bears dropped to 31-13.

KU will play another single game against SW Missouri State at 4 p.m. today in Springfield. After that, the Jayhawks face Oklahoma in a four-game weekend series at Hoglund-Maupin Stadium. The teams will meet at 7 p.m. Friday and again in a 4 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
