A 40-year-old Lecompton man was listed in serious condition at the Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., this morning with a gunshot wound he suffered sometime Wednesday.
Lawrence police reported that a 22-year-old Lawrence woman found the man lying on the floor of her brother's Lecompton residence about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday.
The woman drove the wounded man to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where officers interviewed him and learned that he had been walking on the levee of the Kansas River when he was shot in the left calf.
A police spokesman said the man was "in an advanced state of intoxication" and could not remember exactly when and where he was shot. And police said, the man could not remember how he got to Lecompton after the shooting.
Physicians at LMH, police said, transferred the man to KUMC for surgery. The police spokesman said the gunshot went through his calf, breaking his shin bone.
The spokesman said the man had been living with the Lawrence woman's brother since December 1989.
