— Services for Arthur W. Gabriel, 79, DeSoto, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the DeSoto Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Copeland officiating. Burial will be in the Eudora Cemetery.

Mr. Gabriel died Monday at Delmar Gardens, Olathe, following a long illness.

He was born May 13, 1910, in Eudora, where he graduated from Eudora High School. After graduation, he went to work for the Kaw Valley State Bank in Eudora. He later worked for the DeSoto State Bank.

Mr. Gabriel was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He served in Europe and participated in the Battle of the Bulge where he earned the Bronze Star. When he returned from the war, Mr. Gabriel became the managing officer and president of the DeSoto State Bank. He retired from the bank in 1989.

He was a former DeSoto City Council member and was a member of the Rotary Club, DeSoto Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies of Lawrence, American Legion Post No. 370 of Overland Park, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6654 of DeSoto.

Mr. Gabriel was a former director of the Centennial State Bank in Mission, and a former director of the Lenexa State Bank and Trust in Lenexa. He was a former member of the Kansas House of Representatives, where he served for eight years. He also served on the Kansas State Banking Commission.

He married Alerta Bell Rohe on June 4, 1937, in Kansas City, Kan. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Belva Thrasher, DeSoto; a son, Arlen, DeSoto; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence, where the family will meet friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The family suggests memorials to a charity of the donor's choice.
