A Friday night shooting in Eudora that left two people dead and another seriously injured was a murder-suicide, authorities said today.

Douglas County Sheriff Loren Anderson said that detectives are wrapping up their investigation into the incident and have uncovered ample evidence to indicate that the shooting was a murder-suicide.

“Everything appears that that’s the way it’s going to be,” Anderson said.

Kimberly Hawley, 24, Eudora, and her ex-husband, Douglas Hawley, were killed in the incident. Donald Harris, 25, Eudora, remained in serious condition today at Shawnee Mission Medical Center with a gunshot wound.

AUTHORITIES reported that Hawley, a 28-year-old rural Valley Falls resident, shot and killed Ms. Hawley at 6:57 p.m. Friday while the woman was sitting with Harris in a pickup truck at a house in the 700 block of Maple. Ms. Hawley had left her children with a baby-sitter at the home.

Anderson said Hawley initially fired two shotgun blasts into the rear of the truck at his wife. He said the truck then rolled backward into the street. Hawley then opened the door of the truck and fired a third shot at his ex-wife, Anderson said.

Anderson said detectives believe that Hawley directed the blasts only at his ex-wife and not at Harris, who had been looking after Ms. Hawley after hearing that she and her ex-husband were having problems.

Hawley’s body was found at 7:30 p.m. 2 miles northwest of Eudora. He died from a gunshot wound inflicted by the same weapon used in the shootings in town.

ANDERSON THIS morning said the Hawleys’ 8-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son are in the temporary custody of their maternal grandmother.

Authorities said the incident was the result of a number of domestic problems between the Hawleys, who had been divorced for several years but apparently had continued to try to make their relationship work. Anderson said the relationship recently had deteriorated.

On Oct. 14, Hawley entered Ms. Hawley’s residence by cutting a screen on a bedroom window, officials said. Ms. Hawley was not injured in the incident, but filed a police report.

Anderson said a warrant containing misdemeanor charges of criminal damage to property and criminal trespassing was issued for Hawley’s arrest. The warrant was sent to Jefferson County officials, who were searching for Hawley at the time of his death.

In related news, several Eudora residents have established a trust fund for Harris at the Mutual Savings and Loan of Eudora. Contributions to the fund may be sent to the financial institution or deposited in canisters that have been placed at several Eudora businesses.
