BAKER TOO MUCH FOR TARKIO, 62-32

— Too much offense didn't seem to be enough for Baker on Saturday night at Liston Stadium.

The Wildcats blitzed Tarkio for 45 first-half points, but Baker coach Charlie Richard wanted more. The second half of the 'Cats' 62-32 victory justified his concern.

``I really didn't feel safe, because they can come back and score at any time,'' Richard said. ``I didn't even feel good at the end of the game. They can score so quick and do so many things.''

Baker, 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Heart of America Conference, showed that it can also strike quickly.

The Wildcats, ranked third in NAIA Div. II and tied for first in the league with Missouri Valley, scored on their second play when split end Leonard Jenkins (seven catches, 198 yards) went 72 yards on a touchdown pass.

Baker offensive coordinator Dan Harris said the Owls' big defensive line made the 'Cats go to their quick-strike capability.

``WE KNEW quick power football was what we had to do against them,'' Harris said. ``We couldn't throw long unless it was from the shotgun.''

Tarkio, 1-5-1 (1-2-1), answered on a 20-yard halfback option pass from Joe Powe to split end Frank Romero. Tarkio's Nelson Arboleda missed the extra point to tie the score at 6-6.

Baker re-established the lead behind the running of senior Brad Blackwell. Blackwell scored three touchdowns in seven minutes to give Baker a 28-6 lead after one quarter. The Wildcats built their edge to 45-12 at halftime.

Blackwell finished with 206 yards on 31 carries and four touchdowns.

``We're going to have success running him against almost anybody,'' Harris said. ``(Tackle) Jim Scott and (tight end) Bob Magan do such a good job blocking that Brad hits the hole fast and hard. No one has stopped it yet.''

The Owls outscored Baker 20-17 in the second half.

THE WILDCATS extended their lead to 55-19 with 6:29 left in the third quarter on a 24-yard field goal by Mike Gardner.

Tarkio scored two late touchdowns to close the gap.

The Owls outgained Baker 261-248 after intermission when they turned freshman quarterback Greg Oliver loose.

``In the first half, I was afraid they would come on with their option game,'' Richard said. ``He's a good thrower but he's so dangerous when he runs the ball.''
